      • In terms of the Assessment Strategy and Policy (IIE009) an application for “exemption due to curriculum change” (ECC) can be made where modules have been phased out with no replacement modules OR where the qualification has been phased out.
      • This provision can be applied for students who have failed the discontinuation examination or students who have returned to study within the maximum completion time but were not registered in the last year in which a module was offered and thus did not get the opportunity to write the discontinuation examination. If no more than two modules are outstanding to complete the qualification, and for which there are no replacement modules, the two modules will be marked on the transcript as having been “exempted due to curriculum change (ECC), provided that the credits for the module(s) are less than 20% of the total credits for the qualification. If the credits are more than 20%, then the student will have to complete the respective module(s) externally or register for a different qualification. ECC cannot be granted for core modules as identified by the Faculty – the student will either not graduate or needs to complete a similar module elsewhere for which academic credit can be granted or transfer to another qualification.
      • Where a qualification has been phased out and there are students, including those that have failed special examinations, with no more than two modules to complete who are still within the original maximum time for the qualification, the following scenarios are possible:
      • If they have previously attempted the module they can write the special examination and a discontinuation examination if the module is still available; or
      • They can repeat a replacement module where there is one for the two modules that they still require; or
      • If there is no replacement module available their transcript can, for no more than two modules, be marked as having been “exempted due to curriculum change (ECC)”; provided that the credits for the module(s) are less than 20% of the total credits for the qualification. If the credits are more than 20%, then the student will have to complete the respective module(s) externally or register for a different qualification. ECC cannot be granted for core modules as identified by the Faculty – the student will either not graduate or needs to complete a similar module elsewhere for which AC can be granted or transfer to another qualification.
      • Where the replacement module does not have the same credit value as the original module, a Senate condonation needs to be sought by the Faculty.
      • Students are required to complete a replacement module or the same module at another campus if it is available – they are exempt from attendance but are required to complete assessment requirements. ECC will not be granted to any students for which a replacement module is available at any site within the same city as the campus on which the student originally registered
      • ECC does not apply to SLPs or SLP bundles.
      • Where a qualification has been phased out and a student has more than two modules to complete and there are no replacement modules s/he is required to apply for credits onto a new qualification and to complete that qualification if s/he wishes to graduate. If such a student has exceeded maximum completion time but the qualification is still open on the student administration system (three years after the last ordinary cohort has graduated) and there are replacement modules available the student may apply for an extension of completion time and complete the modules for award of the original qualification.
      • Once the qualification has been closed on the student administration system (three years after the last ordinary cohort has graduated) a student must apply for credits onto a new qualification and complete that qualification to graduate.
